In 1992 the federal government standardized all Medicare Supplement plans to help senior citizens more clearly understand the different coverages. There are currently 10 plan designs that carriers may offer to enrollees and these are labeled plans A - J. Every plan A is the same, as is every plan B, and so on. For the most part, insurance carriers now compete based upon price and customer service. In Washington State the two largest insurers for Medicare Supplement plans are Premera Blue Cross and Regence BlueShield. Follow the links below for plan summaries, rates and enrollment materials.

Premera Blue Cross offers four out of the 10 Medicare Supplement plans (A, C, F and I) to State wide enrollees (except those living in Clark County) who are over age 65 and enrolled on Medicare Parts A and B. If you are under age 65 and eligible for Medicare due to a disability, Plan A is the only option available to you. |

FAQ’s
Why do I need a Medicare Supplement plan?
Medicare covers only a portion of your health care expenses. Coverage through Medicare supplement plans helps eliminate those gaps in benefits. This helps you protect yourself from high out-of-pocket expenses.
How do I qualify for Medicare Supplemental insurance?
You must be enrolled in both Medicare Parts A and B.
Can I continue to see my doctors?
Yes. With Medicare supplement coverage, you can go to any doctor or hospital which accepts Medicare.
Can I be turned down for a Medicare Supplement plan?
It depends when you are applying for a plan. If you are just turning 65 and beginning Medicare Parts A and B, you have a six-month window that guarantees coverage. At other times, there may be some restrictions.
